Watch - Your Accessory

Ever since the ancient Sumerian civilization started using the Sundials to tell time, it has become a part of everyday life to ask the question “What is the time, by your watch?”

A watch has become an important accessory for both men and women. We will talk about watches and the types of watches that can be worn with different outfits.

Watches have 2 very important components that help in deciding what clothes to wear them with: a) The band and b) The dial.

Lets talk about the band first.

The most common bands are bracelets and straps. Bracelets are a series of interlocking links made of metal. Straps are leather, nylon, fabric or plastic.

Typically the formality of watches (based on the straps) is as follows:

Metal > Leather > Fabric > Nylon > Plastic

In metal:

Silver/Platinum > Gold

It is very important to accessorize your watch to be coordinated with the rest of the jewelry you are wearing. If you are wearing gold jewelry, it is important to wear a gold/gold-plated watch.

The dial is just as important part of the watch as the band.

For more formal occasions, it is important to have a simple dial with Roman numerals followed by ones with the Arabic numerals. It could either be a black or white dial. For more elegant watches, look for mother of pearl dials. Dials having bezels (a bezel is a ring around the outside of a dial. They are usually used to measure time and/or speed. Usually present on chronographs.) are lower down on the formality scale.

A digital watch is always less formal than an analog watchand should only be worn on a day when you are going hiking or when you are hitting the gym! Sportswomen, who practice/play sport on a daily basis, can wear them.

When going to an interview, it is exceedingly important to wear one. It tells the interviewer that punctuality is a trait that you hold dear and you respect others’ time just as you would like them to respect yours.

Fashion watches tend to be, as the name suggests, well, fashionable. They can be worn based on the color scheme you are using with your clothes or the other accessories that you are wearing such as your bag and/or your shoes.  Consider buying watches that have bands in different colors so that you can mix and match them with various outfits and/or your other accessories.

Above all remember that less is more when it comes to accessorizing.

As Image Consultants, we provide you inputs on accessories to wear as well.

Remember Douglas Adams (the author of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe) said “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”

Keep time. It’s a great trait! It shows that you respect people and yourself, above all.
